The Schwinn 420, with its 16 resistance levels, 8 workout programs, smooth stride, generous warranty and host of added extras including speakers, a fan, reading rack, water bottle holder and more, offers better value for money than many other comparable ellipticals on the market.
However, as with any other elliptical, it is not perfect; there are definitely a few things that could be improved upon, although the 420’s shortcomings are not particularly important in the grand scheme of things.
The 420’s stride, which is the same as the more expensive Schwinn 430, measures 18 inches, making it suitable for individuals who are 6′ 2″ and under. Like all of Schwinn’s other ellipticals, the stride feels smooth and the machine does a good job at accurately mimicking your walking or jogging motion, which is down to the heavier than average perimeter weighted flywheel.
The Schwinn 420 comes with 16 resistance levels, which means that both in shape and out of shape individuals are able to work out in a gentle, relaxed way if desired, and if you feel like pushing yourself you can just as easily ramp up the resistance level for more of a challenge.
There are 10 workout programs to choose from including 6 course profile programs, 1 fitness test program, 1 custom workout program, 1 results and 1 quick start program.
While this should suffice for most, especially as the custom workout allows you to tailor a workout exactly to your liking, it still would’ve been nice if there were a few more programs.
The computer console (LCD Display) provides feedback on a wide range of information, including time, watts, RPM, interval time, distance, speed, calories, course profile and resistance level.
However, best of all is the heart rate reading, which can be obtained by placing your hands on the handlebars; there are heart rate sensors in the handlebars.
While many of the readings are accurate, unfortunately, the LCD Display is hard to read, especially as the lettering is very thin.
Schwinn have always excelled at providing users with a comfortable workout experience – the Schwinn 420 is no exception.
The handles have been ergonomically designed and can adjusted to allow users of all heights to get into a comfortable position.
There are oversized stabilizers and levelers to ensure a solid workout program. In other words, there is no chance of the elliptical wobbling from side to side as you workout.
There is even a fan, although it’s a bit of a letdown, as the breeze of cool air isn’t powerful enough to be effective.
However, perhaps best of all are the articulating foot plates. The pedals pivot to support your natural motion, resulting in enhanced comfort and reduced fatigue as you workout.
Other features include a water bottle holder, in-console speakers and MP3 music input port and reading rack.
Due to the the Schwinn 420 coming with transport wheels moving the 164 lb machine is made much easier.
The Schwinn 420 is backed by a better than average warranty: 5 years on the frame, 1 year on parts and electronics, 3 months on wear parts.

As mentioned, the fan isn’t powerful enough to be effective, and the LCD display is hard to read due to its thin lettering. The speakers are also a letdown, as the sound quality is quite poor.
Anything Else You Should Know?
The 420 features bi-directional pedaling, enabling you to pedal both forwards and backwards. This is beneficial because it allows you to target various muscle groups.
There’s no denying that the Schwinn 420 is a very good elliptical trainer and available at an affordable price. It is well designed, backed by a generous warranty, offers a comfortable and challenging workout, and is likely to last for many years. However, just keep in mind that the added extras, particularly the fan and speakers, are a bit of a letdown, as is the LCD display.
